Washington, D.C. (pronounced / ˈwɒʃɪŋtən ˌdiːˈsiː / or [ŭașintan di si]), officially District of Columbia or simply D.C. is the capital of the United States of America, founded on July 16, 1790. The city is located on the north side of the Potomac River and borders the state of Virginia to the southwest and the state of Maryland on the other side. The district has a resident population of 599,657 inhabitants; thanks to commuters in the surrounding suburbs, its population amounts to over one million during working days. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is a part, has a population of 5.4 million, making it the eighth largest metropolitan area in the United States. Washington, D.C. it is governed by a mayor and a 13-member local council. However, the United States Congress has supreme authority over the city and may repeal local laws. As a result, residents of the District have fewer government duties than residents of the state. The district does not have the right to vote, except for senators. Residents of the District of Columbia could not vote in the presidential election until ratification of Amendment XXIII of the 1961 United States Constitution.
